Many people snore—almost half of all adults do. Most of the time, it's just a nuisance to the person trying to sleep next to them. But sometimes snoring is a sign of something more: a breathing disorder called sleep apnea. "Worldwide, about one billion people have sleep apnea," says Dr. Atul Malhotra, professor of medicine and sleep medicine specialist at the University of California, San Diego. The prevalence of this disorder is increasing due to the obesity epidemic and an aging population.
