The amount of lingual fat is a determining factor in the development and severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The amount of lingual fat is a determining factor in the development and severity of a condition that affects 7% of the world's population. Specifically, patients with obstructive sleep apnea and obesity are predisposed to accumulating fat in the posterior third of the tongue, explains Dr. Carlos O'Connor, co-director of the Otorhinolaryngology Department at Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital. This center recently incorporated lingual fat ultrasound as a pioneering test in Spain for diagnosing apnea. This advancement is complemented by myofunctional therapy through the "AirwayGym" mobile app, which facilitates the performance of specific exercises to reduce lingual fat and improve sleep apnea.
