Application of optical coherence tomography in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by intermittent airway blockages during sleep, resulting in disturbed breathing. Despite advances in diagnostic tools, current methods for assessing the condition remain limited and often fail to provide a complete picture of airway obstructions that occur during sleep. In a recent study published in Biophotonics Discovery, researchers have explored a new imaging approach that could significantly improve the way we diagnose and understand the causes of sleep apnea. The technique uses swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT), a method commonly employed in eye care, to visualize the upper airway with high accuracy. Here is the link to this important and promising advance.
