Differential diagnosis between obstructive sleep apnea and major depressive disorder

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and major depressive disorder share a significant number of symptoms, such that it is possible that some people diagnosed with depression may have an undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea syndrome as a cause of their psychiatric symptoms. This manuscript presents arguments for how a person with sleep apnea meets diagnostic criteria for depression, and how a physician who does not consider it as a hypothesis may make an erroneous diagnosis.
