During a surgical procedure, an event may occur that endangers the patient's health and generates additional costs. I am referring to the loss of a scalpel or a needle. A little over a year ago, we published an article, together with other ENT specialists, on the evaluation of the effectiveness of using X-rays, compared to the use of a metal detector, during surgery as a recovery method. In this study, both techniques were used to recover a needle lost in the oropharynx during a surgical procedure. The results favor the use of the metal detector since it shortens the recovery time.
