Un estudio de caso desarroll\u00f3 una terapia de estimulaci\u00f3n del nervio hipogloso (HGNS), con un dispositivo implantado que estimula la lengua para mantener abiertas las v\u00edas respiratorias mientras se duerme; en la paciente tratada, la apnea se resolvi\u00f3 completamente durante al menos dos a\u00f1os tras probar sin \u00e9xito el uso de CPAP. Adem\u00e1s, se investiga un tratamiento farmacol\u00f3gico con atomoxetina y aroxibutinina, que podr\u00eda mejorar el tono muscular de estas v\u00edas en pacientes con SED, lo que sugiere que este grupo espec\u00edfico de pacientes \u2014un \u201cexperimento natural\u201d sobre disfunci\u00f3n del tejido conectivo\u2014 podr\u00eda ayudar a desarrollar terapias m\u00e1s personalizadas frente a la apnea del sue\u00f1o<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a group of genetic disorders affecting connective tissue elasticity, are six times more at risk for sleep apnea than the general population due to lax tissues in the tongue and throat that collapse during sleep. One case study developed hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) therapy, with an implanted device that stimulates the tongue to keep the airway open during sleep; in the treated patient, apnea completely resolved for at least two years after an unsuccessful trial of CPAP.
