El jefe de Sección de Neumología del Hospital Universitario La Paz, Francisco García Río, afirmó que la apnea obstructiva del sueño incrementa el riesgo de cáncer, su agresividad y la mortalidad asociada, debido al deterioro del sistema inmunológico causado por la hipoxia intermitente durante el sueño. Durante la XXXIV Reunión Anual de la Sociedad Española de Sueño (SES), que reunió a más de 300 expertos, García Río explicó que las caídas repetidas de oxígeno en sangre propias de la apnea afectan tanto al sistema inmune innato como al adaptativo, reduciendo su capacidad para detectar y eliminar células tumorales.

During the 34th Annual Meeting of the Spanish Sleep Society (SES)—which brought together more than 300 experts—García Río explained that the repeated drops in blood oxygen characteristic of apnea affect both the innate and adaptive immune systems, reducing their capacity to detect and eliminate tumor cells.
