Established risk factors for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR), a leading cause of vision loss, include poor glycemic control, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and tobacco use/nicotine dependence. However, in recent years, obstructive sleep apnea has emerged as a potential risk factor for the progression of DR to more advanced stages, resulting in further visual impairment and a higher treatment burden. This topic is addressed in this article.
